CUPPING

Cupping involves placing heated cups on your skin to create suction. This increases blood circulation to the desired area, which may relieve muscle tension, improve overall blood flow and promote cell repair. It may also help stimulate the formation of new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the area.

DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling while similar to acupuncture, is not the same. The main difference between the two lies in the theory behind why the methods work. Acupuncture focuses on treating medical conditions by restoring energy flow through critical points in the body to restore balance. Where as, dry needling primarily focuses on reducing pain and restoring function through the release of trigger points in our muscles.

The dry needling method assists with decreasing local muscular pain and improves function through stimulating our muscles' natural ability to lengthen and shorten by releasing trigger points. Once the delicate needle has been placed into the centre of a trigger point, blood pools around it, triggering the contracted muscle fibre to relax.

Dry needling can:

- help release trigger points (muscle knots);

- assist with pain management, and;

- restore movement at a joint if inhibited by trigger points.

EXERCISE PRESCRIPTION

Specific & tailored exercise is often prescribed as part of physiotherapy treatment. Like all treatments, it must be carefully applied, continually assessed, then re-assessed, and modified accordingly. Exercise prescription can help you reach your short and long term goals, from simply holding a cup, working without discomfort or performing in a sporting event. The role of exercise is so important as it is not only a form of treatment but is also a self-management and prevention approach.

TENS

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a treatment that uses a low voltage electrical current to provide pain relief. A TENS machine is a battery-powered device that delivers electrical impulses through electrodes that are placed on your skin close to where the pain is. According to research, there are two theories about how TENS works. The first theory is that the electric current stimulates the nerve cells which block pain signal transmissions, altering your perception of pain. The second theory is that when the TENS stimulates our nerves it increases endorphins, which is our body’s natural pain-killing hormone. Endorphins block the perception of pain.

Our physios can treat the following and more through TENS:

- osteoarthritis

- tendinitis

- fibromyalgia

- lower back pain

- bursitis

- peripheral artery disease

- chronic pelvic pain

- diabetic neuropathy

THERAPEUTIC ULTRASOUND

Therapeutic ultrasound is often used to:

- reduce pain

- increase circulation

- increase the mobility of soft tissues

- reduce inflammation

- assist in healing injuries and wounds

- increase healing rates

- increase tissue relaxation

- breakdown scar tissue

The intensity of the ultrasound can be adjusted depending on your condition and desired effect.

A piezoelectric effect* caused by the vibrating crystals in the head of the probe generates ultrasound waves. These waves pass through the skin causing a vibration of the local soft tissues. This vibration causes a deep local heating however, usually no sensation of heat is felt. In the case of acute inflammation or recent injury, the ultrasound can be pulsed rather than continuously transmitted.

*Piezoelectric: means squeeze or press

*Piezoelectric Effect: certain materials generate an electric charge in response to applied mechanical stress.

RPW (Radial Pressure Waves) SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

RPW Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment method. RPWs are acoustic waves generated by the applicator using a very fast-moving ballistic and air pressure. The waves transmit high energy to the desired area to break down damaged tissue, stimulate blood flow and triggers an inflammatory response. RPW Shockwave Therapy will stimulate the body's healing process by triggering a controlled inflammatory response within the targeted area.

This therapy can help with the following;

- tendinopathies

- tendinitis

- plantar fascitis

- tennis elbow

- muscle knots

- frozen shoulder

- heel spur

- calcifications

- hip pain

HYDROTHERAPY

Hydrotherapy is essentially physiotherapy in water. Because the water is supporting our weight, painful movements are often easier to perform. Due to the warmth of the water,  muscles tend to relax which can help ease the pain in your joints, increasing your range of motion.  Hydrotherapy has the potential to decrease swelling, increasing our function and strength. It has also been shown to improve mood, sleep, and fitness in some cases, and weight loss in others.
